Definition
The Past Perfect Continuous Tense is used to show that an action had been continuing for some time before another action or point in the past.
Example:
- I had been studying for two hours before they arrived.
Structure Formation
1️⃣ Affirmative Form
Subject +had+ been+ V-ing + object/complement
Subjects: I, We, You, He, She, It , They, Singular/Plural noun
Example:
The boys had been playing cricket.
2️⃣ Negative Form
Subject+ had+ not+ been+ V-ing+ object
Example:
The boys had not been playing cricket.
3️⃣ Interrogative Form
Had+ subject+ been+ V-ing+ object
Example:
Had the boys been playing cricket?
4️⃣ Negative Interrogative Form
Had+ subject+ not+ been+ V-ing+ object
Example:
Had the boys not been playing cricket?
5️⃣ Wh-Question Form
Q.W.+ had+ subject+ been+ V-ing+ object
Wh-words include: what, when, where, why, who, how, etc.
Example:
Why had the boys been playing cricket?
Usage of Past Perfect Continuous
1️⃣ Action Continuing Up to a Past Point
It shows an action that started before a specific point in the past and continued up to that point.
Example:
They had been working on the project for months before it was cancelled.
2️⃣ Duration Before Another Past Action
Example:
She had been waiting for 30 minutes when the bus arrived.
3️⃣ Cause of a Past Situation
Example:
He was tired because he had been running all morning.
Past Perfect Continuous is not normally used with stative verbs.
❌ She had been knowing him for years.
✅ She had known him for years.
Common Mistakes in Past Perfect Continuous
❌ The boys were watching TV since evening.
✅ The boys had been watching since evening.
❌ When I arrived, he was working for two hours.
✅ When I arrived, he had been working for two hours.
❌ She said that she has been cleaning the floor for one hour.
✅ She said that she had been cleaning the floor for one hour.
❌ He missed the meeting because it was pouring since morning.
✅ He missed the meeting because it had been pouring since meeting.
